I’m Sticking With Netflix and Max in April, and You Probably Should, Too

Like March, April brings the heat with TV show and movie releases across genres and price points. Finales for Daredevil: Born Again and The White Lotus are coming this month, as are premieres for the second and final season of Andor, The Last of Us, Black Mirror, The Handmaid’s Tale final run, season 5 of You and a bunch of new spring anime. It’ll be a balancing act with your remote and streaming bills.

Netflix, Max and Disney Plus have can’t-miss content in their April lineups (look out for A24’s Babygirl), but wrestling fans may want to tune in for WrestleMania on Peacock. I know I’ll need Crunchyroll, but do you need that plus all the mainstays? Maybe.

If you’re aiming to cut your streaming expenses at the moment, tough choices could be in store, but my guide on how to manage your subscriptions encourages you to rotate — or churn your services like ice cream. You’d subscribe when you know something’s on you want to watch, cancel for a spell and then re-subscribe when a streamer has the titles you want.

Changing up your subscriptions can refresh your streaming experience and save cash when Hulu, Netflix, Disney Plus or the other platforms aren’t cutting it. Just be sure to disable auto-renewal for your subscriptions. If you share accounts, this method could be tricky, but I recommend giving it a shot.

Below are my suggestions on the best streamers to keep — or cancel — in April, based on the newest movies, shows and live events coming to each platform. (I didn’t consider live TV streaming services.) Your preferences might vary, but I urge you to consider rotating services for potential savings. It’s easier than you may realize.

Streaming services to keep in April

Disney Plus: Are you ready for the Daredevil: Born Again finale on April 15? Be prepared, then don’t forget Andor, season 2, premieres April 22 with three episodes. Also, Doctor Who, season 2, comes out on April 12.

Max: The Last of Us, season 2, isn’t the only thing popping on Max. Lazarus, a new anime, debuts April 5, but these are the premiere dates to mark on your calendar: 

• Y2K movie (April 4) 
• Hacks, season 4 (April 10)
• The Last of Us, season 2 (April 13)
• The Rehearsal, season 2 (April 20) 
• Babygirl (April 25)

Also, the NBA playoffs and NHL matches stream on B/R Sports, and The White Lotus, season 3, finale airs on April 6.

Netflix: Fan-favorite shows Black Mirror and You are returning to Netflix in April, but this month is full of new drops like Tom Hardy’s Havoc and Devil May Cry, too. Here are the hottest titles on the way:

• Love on the Spectrum, season 3 (April 2)
• Devil May Cry (April 3)
• Pulse (April 3)
• Karma, a new K-drama (April 4)
• Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing (April 9)
• Black Mirror, season 7 (April 10)
• Pop the Balloon Live (April 10)
• Moonrise, anime series (April 10)
• You, season 5 (April 25)
• Havoc, a film starring Tom Hardy (April 25)

Peacock: The main reason to have Peacock in April is for Wrestlemania 41, which streams live April 19-20. There’s also Girl You Know It’s True (a story about Milli Vanilli) on April 4 and on April 17, Law & Order: Organized Crime, season 5. Cancel Peacock if you’re not watching NBC shows, Bravo, sports or what’s listed here. 

Starz: Power Book III: Raising Kanan, season 4, continues to stream this month and into May. 

Hulu: The Handmaid’s Tale debuts April 8 for its final season, which is Hulu’s biggest new arrival. FX’s Dying for Sex debuts on April 3, and a subbed version of Fire Force, season 3, hits on April 4 (it’s also on Crunchyroll). Got to Get Out — a new celebrity reality game show — drops April 11. New network show episodes for Abbott Elementary, Grey’s and Doctor Odyssey will continue to be available to stream here.

Prime Video: You likely have a Prime Video subscription, so here’s a look at the new releases on the way: 

• The Wheel of Time, season 3 finale (April 17) 
• The Bondsman (April 3)
• Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, anime (April 8)
• G20 (April 10)
• Leverage: Redemption (April 17) 
• #1 Happy Family USA (April 17)
• Étoile (April 24)

Paramount Plus: Live sports — like NCAA games — and The Masters stream on Paramount Plus this month, as does Yellowjackets. Other April releases include CBS season finales for Matlock (April 17), Fire Country (April 25), NCIS: Sydney (April 25), Poppa’s House (April 28) and NCIS: Origins (April 28). If these don’t interest you, cancel Paramount Plus.

Drop this service in April

Apple TV Plus: If you’re watching The Studio or want to watch debuts for Your Friends and Neighbors on April 11 and Government Cheese on April 16, then keep this one. If not, cancel Apple TV Plus (or use this month to binge Severance first before canceling).

Patience saves money on streaming

Don’t let FOMO get in the way of savings. Rotating your subscriptions is a clever way to finesse your streaming budget if you can wait patiently until most or all episodes of your favorite shows are on a streaming service. Why commit to a subscription for several months just to watch a show that lasts six or 10 weeks when you can opt to binge-watch everything in one month and then do it all over again? This is ideal for those who love binges or a condensed viewing schedule.

Look at The Handmaid’s Tale, which has 10 episodes this season. If that’s the only reason you have Hulu, then you can wait until June to watch the entire final season rather than pay for three months of it. It’s the same idea for shows like Lazarus, The Last of Us or Andor if you don’t mind playing the waiting game to save cash. Catch a series a month or so later in the season, or wait to binge all the episodes in later months. 

Eye what you’re spending on streaming each month for every service and do the math. Netflix is now more, ranging from $8 to $25 (plus extra member fees), and Paramount Plus starts at $8. Apple TV Plus is $10. Disney Plus is anywhere from $10 to $27, depending on bundles. Max costs $10 to $21, Hulu is $10 a month, Starz runs $11 now and Peacock starts at $8. If you want to rotate, you can set up calendar alerts to remind you when it’s time to resubscribe or cancel.
