Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki, Hisashi Takeuchi said that the company’s target is to achieve the first position in electric vehicles in the next one year. He said, “I cannot give an estimate of sales figures but I can tell that we aim to achieve the first position in manufacturing of EV within a year.” The company’s e Vitara will be manufactured in its factory in Gujarat. It will be exported to many countries including Japan.
The company will soon inform the price and booking date of e Vitara. Maruti Suzuki plans to add six EV models to its portfolio in the coming years. e Vitara will be manufactured on the HEARTECT-e platform specifically designed for battery-powered electric vehicles. It has two separate electric axles at the front and rear. The eVitara has Trail mode for driving on bad roads.
This electric SUV has two battery variants of 49 kWh and 61 kWh. Single-speed drive transmission has been given in eVitara. Its range is a little more than 500 kilometers. The share of EV in the total sales of vehicles in the country is less than 10 percent. India is the third largest automobile market in the world after America and China. Despite this, the number of EVs in the country is low. However, the trend of decline in international sales of EV is not visible in India. Between January and November last year, EV sales in the country have increased by about 30 percent. Measures are also being taken by the Central Government to promote EV. Big electric vehicle companies like China’s BYD already have a presence in the country. These companies are preparing to increase their market share with new models.
