It is worth noting here that the magnetic North Pole is different from the geographical North Pole of our Earth. The geographical North Pole remains in the same place. At the same time, the position of the magnetic north pole is determined by our Earth’s magnetic field, which moves continuously.
Scientists have observed that the movement of the magnetic field has been unpredictable in recent years. Sometimes it speeds up and sometimes it slows down. Scientists are unable to explain this behavior.
If we look into history, British explorer Sir James Clark Ross discovered the Magnetic North Pole in 1831. He was then in Northern Canada. Since then it is shifting towards Russia. Since 1931, its position has changed by 400 kilometers.
Usually it is moving at a speed of 10 kilometers per year. It gained momentum in 1990 and then it started shifting from a speed of 15 kilometers per annum to a speed of 55 kilometers per annum. In 2015 this speed came down to 35 kilometers per year. This shift towards Russia is now happening at a slower pace.
